“Sam Ratnam moved from Sri Lanka to England at young age in the 1960s. He arrived with £5 in his pocket but worked hard whilst also studying to become a Chartered Accountant and Economist, he was a fellow member by 1979.

After qualifying Sam initially worked as a Chartered Accountant in various chartered accountancy practice’s before becoming financial controller for a Blue-Chip company.

He then decided to work for the U. K. Government’s diplomatic service and in this role he was sent first to Malawi where he was an advisor to the President, Dr. Hastings Banda and then to Kenya where he acted as advisor to the Minister of Finance. In these roles he worked closely and the United Nations, IMF, and the World Bank.

In the late 1980s Sam decided to establish his own company, Ratnam & Co, starting off with a single client.

Mostly through word of mouth he quickly grew the business to where it stands today, one of the largest and most competitive accountancy practices in Northwest London.

Sam was an expert in the handling of complicated tax investigations and was approached by a few individuals and companies who were in dispute with tax authorities. In this regard he took on and defeated HMRC on numerous occasions in matters which were highly technical and complicated despite being at the time a smaller practice.

A testament to the work of Sam and of Ratnam & Co is that the company is now used by many descendants of our original clients to whom we give financial advice as well as help and advice on tax and property finance, planning and execution.
