HMRC Scams – beware?

Once again there are reports of “phishing” emails apparently from HMRC.

They are getting increasingly sophisticated and are looking more and more genuine – appearance, typeface etc. The latest one seems to be headed up “New message about changes to your VAT business return” and asks you to access your account.

There is one “giveaway” in the text – it starts with “Greetings, we trust this message finds you well”. HMRC never enquire after your health in this way!

To further check, hover the mouse over the email address from which it is sent – and this may well display a strange email address not related to HMRC at all.

If you do receive such an email, do not click on Access your account. Immediately forward it to phishing@hmrc.gov.uk and delete it.

The HMRC website has further detailed information on phishing and scams available at the link below.
